Be careful in lee areas in the alpine with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Naturally released loose avalanches can occur in the lower areas

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Tysdag har det kome noko nysnø heilt ned til havnivå. Det underliggande snødekket er gjennomfukta opp til omlag 500 moh. I dei aller høgaste fjellområda kan ein finne fokksnøansamlingar. Det lite snø igjen under 300 moh.

Det vert observert moderat snøfokk og enkelte drønn i fersk fokksnø i fjella ved Harstad på tysdag.

3 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from northwest. -8 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 1. January 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 37 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -5 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

På dei aller høgaste toppane vil det kunne danne seg store fokksnøflak i leområder. Temperaturauke og nedbør i form av regn i låglandet vil føre til at det kan gå naturleg utløyste skred der det ligg snø frå før. Skredfaren er høgast i indre delar av regionen.
